Maxine Midtbo, the founder of Memor, is a multidisciplinary artist that focuses on collecting fragments of daily life and making them into contemporary heirlooms. According to her interview with Escolhido, as a young girl Midtbo would go with her mom to estate sales where she fell in love with the art of collecting. In 2018, she began to experiment creating unique pieces with shards and findings she had collected from her farm house with some being over 100 years old. One year later in April of 2019, she launched a collaborative project with Rachel Saunders ceramics that kickstarted the brand and created a limited supply of one-of-a-kind vases that sold out in about four hours.
Inspired by ceramics and mosaic works throughout the ages, the Memor shop sells ready-to-ship conch wind bells and frames and collections that include unique products such as planters, jars, jewelry boxes, lamps, and more. I first came across the studio's Instagram page @memor_studio in the summer of 2019 while scrolling through Pinterest and came across an image of one of their stunning phone cases. I immediately went to their website and discovered that they offer custom phone cases, vases, and commemorative pieces on their shop that take about a month for them to make. I love the idea of having a custom phone case made from antique and repurposed pieces, and they allow customers to build their perfect piece from styles such as conch, tarot, and desert with no two cases being exactly the same. If the styles on the website aren't exactly what the customer is looking for, they are able to send in mood boards of the kinds of colors and items they are looking for to create a phone case which will make it unique to them and their taste.
These custom phone cases have recently become a viral sensation, with many people trying to recreate these phone cases with their own material at home. In addition, Free People added Memor products to their website that include a vase made of various shells and heart-shaped jewelry box. Memor Studio is definitely a small business to watch, and you can follow their journey here.
